President |
Dear Shamrox Fan,
Since
our last edition of Shamrox Scoop a lot has been
happening: Our first-ever Chicago Shamrox Home Game
will be on Saturday January 6th at 7:30pm against
New York at the new Sears Centre as we released our
schedule. We announced our ticket prices and started
selling season tickets. We selected college players
at the NLL Entry Draft at Madison Square Garden. And
the Chicago Shamrox became a national sports story
on ESPN “Sports Center”. What a month!! Details on
each of these events are included in this edition of
Shamrox Scoop and our website
www.ChicagoShamrox.com.
In this edition of Shamrox Scoop, our featured
information includes an “insider look” at the
Shamrox NLL draft, a “one-on-one” with Head Coach
Jamie Batley about his take on the draft as well as
his Peterborough team winning the Mann Cup, and a
feature interview with Shamrox #1 draft pick Josh
Wasson-McQuigge. Plus ticket info, complete schedule
listing, updates and more.
And a reminder, Season Tickets are now on sale, with
Season Tickets starting at only $10 a game. And
while tickets for individual games will not be on
sale until late November, we are reserving Group
Ticket purchases for specific games for group
outings and events.
We’ve got a great home schedule with five
Saturday nights (including St. Patrick’s Day) and
three Sunday afternoons.
Lastly, thanks for your support. We’ve received a
ton of emails from fans excited about getting their
tickets for the Inaugural Season of the Chicago
Shamrox . We sincerely appreciate your feedback and
hearing about your excitement, ideas, suggestions.
One fan wants to start a fan club for one of our
players! And we’ve had fans from cities of other
teams inquiring as to road trips to Chicago….we’ll
have to drown them out with our Shamrox cheering!
We’re three months away from the “Home Opener” and
the excitement is building. So get your tickets,
email your comments, and get psyched! GO SHAMROX!!
Sincerely,

Conrad “Connie” Kowal

| Inside The NLL Draft |
|
|
By: Barrett Sallee |
 |
| (left to
right) Shamrox Head Coach Jamie Batley, newly
acquired defenseman, Eric Martin and NLL
Commissioner, Jim Jennings. |
The 2006 NLL Entry Draft on September 13 was a
monumental day in Shamrox history. Not only was it
the first entry draft in the Shamrox brief history,
but it was the culmination of months of hard work
for Head Coach Jamie Batley, President Connie Kowal,
VP of Lax Ops Phil Ryan, scout Andrew McKay, team
co-owner Kevin Loughery, Jr. and numerous others
affiliated with the Chicago Shamrox.
After scouting over 100 games, viewing a bunch of
game tapes, reviewing a countless number of player
profiles; the Shamrox came to New York with one goal
in mind, to draft as many players that can start and
make an impact immediately. That goal went totally
fulfilled.
Hours before the draft started, Shamrox
representatives met for one final time at
Gallagher’s Steak House in New York City to finalize
their draft plans, tie up any loose ends, and go
over any scenarios that could occur other than their
mock draft. The crew walked into The Theater at
Madison Square Garden on September 13 prepared to
build a playoff contender in 2007.
After trading the number 2 pick a month prior to the
draft to acquire star defender Cam Woods, the
Shamrox had to wait until the 12th pick to make
their first impact. After watching the way things
shook out, the decision to draft Josh Wasson-McQuigge
out of the University of Hartford was an easy one.
“We knew that, if Josh was available at 12, we were
going to take him.” said Andrew McKay, scout for the
Shamrox. “Josh has a rare combination of
ball-handling skills and scoring ability. And, I am
sure that his high energy on every play will endear
him to our fans.”
After trading the second pick of the second round
(14th overall) to the Calgary Roughnecks for the
17th overall pick and an additional 4th rounder, the
Shamrox selected Jackson Gair, a scoring machine
from the Orilla Rama Kings and Bishop University of
Canada. Gair amassed 36 goals and 60 assists last
season for Orilla, of the OLA Jr. A League.
“We had our eyes on Gair,” McKay explains, “but we
were fairly confident that nobody was going to grab
him. Calgary, on the other hand, had its eye on Luke
Hinton. So, we traded them the 14th for the 17th
pick and the 41st pick. Sure enough, Gair was still
available at 17, and we got our first true
high-scoring threat.”
This draft pick was significant for another reason,
Gair’s mom, Mary Gair, posed on the podium with
Shamrox gear instead of Jackson, who was at college
and unable to attend. The event garnered national
attention when it appeared on ESPN Sportscenter’s
“Top 10” segment on September 19.
“When my name was called,” said Jackson, “I turned
to my buddy and jokingly said, ‘So who’s going on
stage? My mom?!?!?! And sure enough, there she was.”
The consensus steal of the draft came in round 3
when the Shamrox selected Mike Kirk out of Dickinson
College and the Brampton Excelsiors of the OLA.
Kirk’s accolades include; captain of the Dickinson
Red Devils in 2006, a 4-year starter and letter
winner, and an all-Centennial Conference selection
in 2004. The selection of Kirk marked the first time
that a player out of Dickinson has ever been
selected in the NLL Entry Draft.
“How surprised was I that he was still around at
number 27?” McKay states. “I asked Coach Batley to
take our 5-minute extension, because my paranoia
kicked in and I had to make sure that Kirk had
actually finished school and was eligible to play.
He is a big, strong defender who’s already played
two full years with the Brampton Excelsiors against
some big time competition.”
The fourth round provided back-to-back picks for the
Shamrox and scoring was, again, the pressing issue.
First, the Shamrox selected Shane Sargent, of the
Whitby Warriors of the OLA. Sargent is a playmaker.
“I’ve been around Shane for two years and, when you
need a clutch goal, he is the one to get it for
you.” explains McKay. “He is a leader at heart and
his addition to the Shamrox will make us that much
better.”
 |
| Newly
acquired forward, Bill McGlone |
With the very next pick of the draft, the Shamrox
selected Bill McGlone out of the University of
Maryland. McGlone’s honors include Terrapins team
captain in 2006 and All-American and All-ACC honors
in 2005 and 2006.
“We were very surprised that Bill was still around
at this point.” says McKay. “We had him rated as the
number 3 U.S. player. We’re hoping his scoring touch
that he displayed at the University of Maryland
translates well to the indoor game.”
In the game of lacrosse, what hand a player shoots
with is very vital to the success of a team. You
want to have guys that can shoot from different
angles to maximize scoring. That is why, when the
Shamrox saw that Cody Jacobs was available in the
fifth round, they were ecstatic. Jacobs is a
left-handed forward with a rifle shot. Over the last
two seasons with the Six Nations Arrows of Canada,
he amassed 186 points in 72 games.
“That was another one of those, ‘I can’t believe he
is still here’ moments.” says McKay. “We got a steal
with Jacobs.”
In the sixth round, there was a bit of a power
struggle because there were plenty of talented
players still available. The Shamrox chose to go the
defensive route and selected Eric Martin out of
Kitchener-Waterloo of the OLA. In 109 career Jr. A
games, Martin tallied 56 points and is known for
hard-nosed style of play.
“Martin is a tough-as-nails defender who can run the
floor and participate on offense.” says McKay. “I
was really happy to hear his name called as our
first draft came to a close.”
The Shamrox believe that all 7 of their 2006 draft
picks have a chance to make the roster and make an
immediate impact in the NLL in 2007. That was the
goal of the draft and the Shamrox feel that their
goal will come to fruition. |

 |
| 1-on-1 with Josh
Wasson-McQuigge |
Shamrox
Scoop: Where were you when you heard the news
that the Shamrox selected you and what were your
thoughts?
Josh Wasson-MCcQuigge: When I heard that I had
been selected by the Shamrox, I was with my hometown
team, the Peterborough Lakers, beating the Victoria
Shamrocks in the clinching game 6 of the Mann Cup. I
was happy to go to Chicago for a number of reasons
and excited to start my career with a brand new
franchise.
SS: Being the 1st round draft pick of an
expansion franchise, does that add any more pressure
to perform at a high level immediately?
JWM: I feel that there is some pressure to
perform well being a first round draft pick. The
team has expectations of me to perform and I have
certain expectations of myself as well. If I stick
to playing my style of game I think I should do
fine.
SS: What do you expect from head coach Jamie
Batley?
JWM: I expect the same from Jamie as I saw in
the summer with him being the head coach of our
team. Jamie expects the team and everyone on it to
be the hardest working players on the floor and in
practice day in and day out.
SS: What type of player are you and what are
your best attributes as a player?
JWM: I considered myself to be more of an off
ball player. I like to go through the middle, set
picks and go to the net, and of course score when
the opportunity is there. I have been working on my
play with the ball and outside shots to become a
well rounded player.
SS: Do you have an NLL player that you look up
to or pattern your play after?
JWM: An NLL player that I look up to would be
Tracey Kelusky of the Calgary Roughnecks. I played
with him this summer at home and he really helped me
with my game. We both play a very similar style so
it was easy to relate to the things that he would
show me.
SS: What do you think of the city of Chicago?
JWM: I think Chicago is a great sports city with
a good atmosphere and great fans. I have only heard
great things about it and that the city is a lot of
fun. I have never actually been there but I am very
excited to check it out sometime soon.
SS: Do you plan on moving to Chicago?
JWM: I plan on moving to Chicago as soon as I
finish up this semester at the University of
Hartford where I am currently studying and majoring
in Psychology.
SS: The NLL is growing at a rapid pace. What do
you think of the league and its future?
JWM: I think that the NLL is doing a great job
promoting and expanding lacrosse. The future of the
NLL looks very positive; I can only see it getting
bigger and bigger as time goes by.
SS: Outside of lacrosse, what are some of your
hobbies, interests, etc.?
JWM: Outside of lacrosse I enjoy listening to
music and spending time with my friends. I enjoy all
kinds of sports, but Hockey, Football and Baseball
are my favorites to watch and play outside of
lacrosse.
SS: If you weren’t a lacrosse player, what sport
would you play?
JWM: If wasn’t a lacrosse player I would most
likely be playing hockey. I also enjoy football, I
didn’t play much when I was younger but I have
always wanted to.
SS: Do you have another job and, if so, what and
where?
JWM: As of right now I do not have another job,
mainly because I am in school. But, when I graduate,
I hope to find something within my major in the
Chicago area.
SS: If you were stranded on a deserted island,
and were only allowed to have three things, what
would they be?
JWM: The three things that I would need on a
desert island would be my iPod for some music to
listen to, a pretty girl to keep me company and my
lacrosse stick. |

| 1-on-1 with Jamie
Batley |
Shamrox
Scoop: First off, congratulations on a great
draft and your Mann Cup Championship…
Jamie Batley: Thanks
SS: The Shamrox selected Josh Wasson-McQuigge
out of the University of Hartford with their first
round draft pick. Tell us a little about him…
JB: Josh is a small, speedy, right-handed goal
scorer with tons of lacrosse experience both field
and box. He was a captain at the University of
Hartford and was a major factor in his box teams’
Canadian Championship this fall.
SS: After trading down in the second round and
picking up an additional 4th rounder, you selected
Jackson Gair. What does he bring to the Shamrox?
JB: Jackson is another right-handed goal scorer
who is big and can find his way to the net.
SS: Were there any surprises in the draft? Any
players that you didn’t think you would get that
fell to you?
JB: We got Cody Jacobs in the fifth round which
was huge as he is a left-handed goal scorer from Six
Nations and has led his team to the national
championship the last two years. Has a great outside
shot.
Also getting Mike Kirk in the third round was
amazing. He has two years major box experience in
Canada with Brampton and is a steady defender.
SS: Which of the new draftees can the fans
expect to make an immediate impact for the Shamrox?
JB: They all should make an impact but Wasson-McQuigge
has the ability to score 25 goals as a rookie.
SS: While the draft was going on, the
Peterborough Lakers, your MSL team in Ontario, was
wrapping up the Mann Cup championship. First off,
tell the fans what the Mann Cup is and what it means
to you.
JB: The Mann Cup is the most sought after
championship in Canadian Lacrosse.
The cup brings over 100 years of lacrosse history
with it and every player wants to win it. This was
our third straight appearance in the championship
and our second win, 2004, 2006. This championship
puts you in lacrosse history with a lot of the
greats who have played the game.
SS: How difficult was it to focus on drafting
for the Shamrox while the Lakers were playing in the
biggest game of the year?
JB: We were up three games to one, so I didn’t
watch much in the beginning but when the final 5
minutes was being played I was on the phone getting
updates.
SS: Describe the commotion of the draft for the
fans. What all goes on on draft night? How many
trades are being offered?
JB: The draft is pretty busy in the early going
as managers try to move up to get the best players,
I would say there are two deals attempted for every
player selected in the first round. You have to know
your inventory and what’s available, you also have
to know the others teams players.
SS: Most of the Shamrox new draft picks have
experience in box (indoor) lacrosse. How much of an
advantage is that as opposed to players with
experience in only field lacrosse?
JB: The major difference is that you are playing
in a confined area so you have to get used to that
first. You just can’t retreat, then start your
attack again. Once a player is used to the confined
area he is able to adapt to any pressure and make
good decisions.
SS: Jamie, thank you for your time.
Congratulations on a great draft. And good luck in
training camp.
JB: Thank you, it was my pleasure. |
