Shamrox use 10-0 run to notch second straight victory, 15-10 over Minnesota Swarm

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - For Shamrox fans, it was a familiar sight. Chicago fell behind early in the first quarter, this time to the Minnesota Swarm, however this time it would be different, much different.

After spotting the Swarm (7-4) a 5-1 first quarter lead, Chicago ambushed Minnesota with ten unanswered goals that lasted into the fourth quarter and the Shamrox (3-7) won their second consecutive game 15-10 in National Lacrosse League action before 4,036 fans at the Sears Centre on Saturday night.

“Usually when we get down [1-0 or 2-0], the guys on the bench have their heads down and we’re beat two minutes into the game, whether it be a bad goal or a bad play,” Shamrox Jonas Derks said. “Today we had confidence and getting down 4-0 today was a lot different than getting down 4-0 three weeks ago.”

Cody Jacobs led the Shamrox with six goals and an assist. Jacobs’ six goal performance broke his own Shamrox record for goals in a game and it also set a new team record for most goals for a player in a game. In 2007, Jacobs scored four goals against the Phildelphia Wings on April 14.

“There’s no feeling like it and I can’t explain it,” Jacobs said. “I’ve been waiting for this my entire life and I couldn’t have dreamed I’d get six goals in one game.”

Chicago goaltender Matt Roik got off to a rough start, allowing five first quarter goals including three in the game’s first five minutes. Roik settled in and shut out the Swarm for the next two quarters. He turned down 45 of 55 shots.

After falling behind 4-0, the Shamrox Bobby McBride notched Chicago’s first goal unassisted. Minnesota’s Keith Cromwell answered later in the quarter to make it 5-1. However, Minnesota did not score again until 13:40 mark of the fourth quarter.

“It started from our goalie, Matt Roik played a big game,” Jacobs said. “As soon as the [defense] goes, the offense starts going and the goals come easy after that.”

The Swarm made the game interesting with three straight goals in the fourth quarter-two off powerplays- to cut Chicago’s lead to 11-8. That was as close as Minnesota would get. The Shamrox nailed down, super glued and duct taped the coffin by scoring the next three goals and took a comfortable 14-8 with three minutes left in the game before the Swarm scored the two of the games final three goals.

“[Minnesota] is very quick, we were out forcing them by the boards and they went underneath and got great opportunites and scored,” Shamrox coach Jamie Batley said. “I know we got 10 straight goals, but moreover than that, we responded defensively. Our goaltender and our defense stoped them from scoring for 30 minutes.”

The Shamrox return to the Sears Centre next week on Saturday, April 5 against the Philadelphia Wings at 7:00 p.m
